1st Hour. (Correcting & 3D)

Hi all,

Last day we had a look at present continuous with future meaning for making arrangements. Today we are going to study a very similar tense in form, but very different in meaning, the Past continuous, a tense to express actions in the past. But actions, seen as a period of time, not as an isolated event in the past.

Here you are inserted the schema that I have prepared for you.

         e.g. COME- Com-ing

2nd) Verbs ending in short vowel  (Monosyllable and short vowel)

         e.g. RUN- run-ning

3rd) Verbs ending in “y”

         e.g. CARRY. carrying

Uses:

1st) To describe actions in progress at a specific time in the past.

e.g. I was cleaning the kitchen by that time.

2nd) An action in the past creates another.

e.g. I was having a shower when the telephone rang.

Have a look at page 44 and answer the following questions:

-        From which kind of text have been those fragments taken?

-        Which tenses have been mostly used?

After that, answer the questions that appear at the beginning of the text:

-        What was the weather like?

-        Why there was a lot of traffic?

-        Where was Diana going?

Then try to order the different fragments of the text by writing a number in each place for that. Can you see it?

And now a little bit of Spanish…

Resumiendo:

Casi, al igual que es el español, en inglés utilizamos el pasado continuo para:

-        Hablar de periodos de tiempo en el pasado,

-        Narrar historias del pasado.

Alter that, now, you are prepared to write the composition from the Mock exam. Remember? The one about what was you doing when the Twin towers collapsed?

2nd Hour (3D)

Now that we know how to use the Past simple, it is time to mix it wit other tense. So have a look at page 45 from your book and write the name of the tense of each sentence used.

-        She hit the cat vs. she was driving along the road.

Then, complete the gaps from GRAMMAR FOCUS 2 c.

Do you know now where to use both tenses? Ok? Then do the practice from the book.

The rest of the exercise will be appear during this week in my website. I’ll send you an email to tell you.

Have a nice Puente!

María
